Join Charlotte and her friends for an autumn walk through the woods as they discover the animals, birds and signs of nature all around them. From listening to birds in the trees and spotting a squirrel to following mysterious paw prints and meeting a rabbit, badger and wild boar, A Woodland Walk turns a simple outdoor adventure into a fun bilingual learning journey.
The story begins on a beautiful autumn morning when Charlotte heads out for a walk. Soon, her friends join her and together they explore the woodland, listening to birds, admiring the autumn trees and discovering the animals that live there. They spot magpies, a green woodpecker, a squirrel, rabbit and badger before unexpectedly coming face to face with a wild boar!
The story provides a natural context for developing French vocabulary around woodland animals, birds, nature and movement. Children learn words including l’écureuil (squirrel), l’arbre (tree), le lapin (rabbit), le blaireau (badger), la pie (magpie), le pivert (green woodpecker), le sanglier (wild boar), le champignon (mushroom) and les bois (woods).
A second vocabulary section introduces useful words and actions including se promener (to walk), venir (to come), aller(to go), renifler (to sniff), chanter (to sing), les bottes de pluie (welly boots), les empreintes de pattes (paw prints) and la flaque d’eau (puddle).
The bilingual Woodland Walk song / Dans les bois reinforces the language through music and repetition as children sing about walking through the woods, the birds and animals they discover and getting muddy along the way.
But A Woodland Walk is much more than a vocabulary workbook. Children discover fascinating facts about wild boars and badgers, explore the natural world and complete a creative woodland project. The Dive in Deeper section also encourages children to explore animal sounds, autumn, the countryside and differences between French and English.
