Join Arty the cat on an exciting adventure to the countryside, where he visits a busy farm and discovers a wonderful world of animals, nature and farming.

From the moment he arrives, Arty is fascinated by everything around him and, as always, begins to see the world through his artistic eyes.

As Arty explores the farm, he encounters chickens and their chicks, ducks and ducklings, cows and calves, a little lamb, pigs, horses and a mare with her foal. He travels around the farm, follows the sounds of the animals and discovers the different sights, colours and characters that make up life in the countryside.  Along the way, Arty notices things that others might overlook and begins to imagine how he could use what he finds to create something of his own.

The story provides a rich context for developing French vocabulary and phrases around animals, the countryside, farming, food, nature, colours, sounds and everyday activities. The accompanying song gives children another enjoyable way to hear and practise the language, with a playful exploration of the different sounds made by animals in the countryside.

But this is much more than a story about a visit to a farm. Arty's adventure encourages children to look closely at the world around them, think about where their food comes from and develop an understanding of the countryside and the people and animals who live and work there. The story also introduces ideas around caring for the natural world, respecting animals and being considerate when visiting the countryside.

The workbook also brings Arty's love of art into the adventure. Children follow his creative ideas as he notices colours, shapes and interesting objects around the farm and eventually puts his inspiration to work, creating a rather unusual piece of farmyard art!

The Dive Deeper section takes the learning beyond the story with opportunities to investigate, discuss and discover more about farms, food, animals and the countryside. Children can explore where food comes from, different types of farms, animal names in French and English, and the fascinating differences between animal sounds in different languages.
