Join Leo on a lovely autumn walk as he explores the changing season with his friends. From the beginning of the school year in September through to the excitement of Bonfire Night in November, there is plenty to see, discover and enjoy.
As Leo and the children walk through the countryside, they see the farmer harvesting the crops and pick apples in the orchards. They watch a combine harvester collecting the corn, discover animals preparing for winter and see the leaves changing colour and falling to the ground. They collect food for their village and look forward to the Harvest Festival, before celebrating Bonfire Night with sausages, toffee apples, a bonfire and colourful fireworks.
The story provides a rich context for developing English vocabulary and phrases around autumn, seasons, nature, animals, food, school, the harvest, colours, weather and everyday activities. The accompanying song brings the changing season to life as children sing about the leaves turning red and yellow, falling to the ground, being raked up and kicked into the air.
But this is much more than a story about autumn. Leo's walk encourages children to look closely at the natural world and notice how the countryside changes as the season progresses. They discover how animals prepare for winter, why leaves change colour, what happens during the harvest and how autumn traditions such as the Harvest Festival and Bonfire Night are celebrated.
The workbook also introduces children to aspects of British life and culture, including going back to school in September, school uniforms, the Harvest Festival and the traditions surrounding the 5th of November. Children are encouraged to observe, discuss and think about the world around them as they follow Leo's adventures.
The Fun Autumn Facts section takes children beyond the story to discover fascinating information about animals, autumn leaves, seasonal traditions and autumn food. They learn about hibernation, migration, deciduous trees, the autumn equinox, Halloween, harvest traditions and the abundance of food available during the autumn months.
The Dive Deeper section takes the learning further with opportunities to investigate and discuss reflexive verbs, harvest festivals around the world, school uniforms in different countries, months and days of the week, and adjectives used to describe the seasons.
