Join Charlie Rabbit as he discovers some mysterious packets of seeds in the garden and sets out to grow them into trees. But these are no ordinary seeds — each one is a different shape! As Charlie plants his seeds and patiently waits for them to grow, children discover shapes, gardening, nature and the importance of giving things time.
Charlie begins by finding packets of seeds with pictures of different-shaped trees. There is a square, a triangle, a circle, a rectangle, a star and a diamond. Charlie's favourite shape is a star, so he carefully plants each seed, one by one, and waits for something to happen.
But growing trees takes time. The first day nothing happens. The next day nothing happens either. Charlie keeps waiting, watching and caring for his seeds. He discovers that seeds need sunshine, rain and time to grow. Eventually the trees begin to appear, each one taking the shape of its special seed. Charlie is delighted when his favourite star tree finally grows.
The story provides a rich context for developing French vocabulary and phrases around shapes, colours, nature, gardening, plants, trees, weather, time and everyday activities. Children hear and practise language such as What has he found?, What shape is it?, It's a triangle, He plants the seeds, He digs a hole, He covers them with soil and The trees are growing.
The accompanying song brings Charlie's adventure to life as children sing about the packets of seeds, the different shapes, sunshine, rain and the time needed for the seeds to become big, strong trees. Charlie's favourite shape is celebrated throughout the song, giving children plenty of opportunity to hear and repeat familiar vocabulary and phrases.
But this is much more than a story about shapes and planting seeds. Charlie's adventure introduces an important life lesson: some things need more time. Children are encouraged to think about times when they have had to wait, practise or work hard before seeing the results they hoped for. Charlie learns that good things do not always happen immediately — sometimes we simply have to be patient and keep going.
The story also encourages children to look closely at the natural world. They discover that trees come in many different shapes and sizes and that plants need the right conditions to grow. The story turns something as simple as planting a seed into an opportunity to explore nature, observation, patience and the world around us.
The Fun Tree Facts section takes children beyond Charlie's story to discover fascinating information about trees around the world. They learn how many different types of trees there are, how incredibly tall or small trees can be, how trees help to keep our planet healthy and how old some trees can become. They also discover the fascinating underground fungal networks that connect trees and plants — sometimes described as the wood-wide web.
The Dive Deeper section takes the learning further with opportunities to investigate the French question Qu'est-ce que…?, explore pronunciation, think about the life lesson of the story, grow their own seeds and investigate the conditions that different plants need to grow. Children are also encouraged to look at the trees around them and discover which types of trees are common where they live.
