Join Charlie Rabbit and his impatient friend Snail on a delicious adventure that begins with one simple question: “Where’s the pizza?”
When Charlie Rabbit invites his friend Snail to a pizza dinner, Snail naturally thinks that it will be that evening, but Charlie knows that good things take time! As they wait, Charlie takes Snail on a journey to discover where the ingredients really come from — from growing tomatoes and olives, to wheat being harvested and turned into flour, cheese being made from milk, and dough being carefully mixed and left to rise. By the time the pizza finally arrives, Snail has learned that there is much more to our food than simply buying it from a supermarket.
The story introduces children to the recurring Charlie Rabbit theme that good things take time, while naturally building French vocabulary and phrases around food, ingredients, cooking, nature and everyday activities. The accompanying song reinforces the story with the wonderfully memorable refrain “Les bonnes choses prennent du temps” – “Good things take time.”
But this is much more than a story about making pizza. Charlie's Slow Food pages encourage children to think about local and seasonal food, growing their own ingredients, learning to cook and considering where the food they eat actually comes from. The Dive Deeper section takes these ideas further with questions and discussion about food, cooking, healthy eating, food miles and the Slow Food movement.
