Join Little Beast on a magical night-time adventure filled with stars, dreams, friendship and imagination. Designed especially for the run-up to Christmas, Little Beast is usually enjoyed during November and December, bringing a little magic and wonder to French language learning at this special time of year.

Little Beast is having trouble getting to sleep. It's late, he's tired, but sleep just won't come. So he heads outside, where the night sky is full of stars. As he looks around, stretches, dreams and watches the stars, a magical adventure begins. Little Beast meets a new friend, dances with a star, travels through the night and discovers that sometimes the most wonderful things happen when we allow ourselves to dream.

The story provides a rich context for developing French vocabulary and phrases around the night, stars, the moon, colours, size, movement, friendship, dreams and everyday activities. Children hear and practise language such as la lune, l'étoile, le visage, le monstre, la voiture, le rêve, chanter, sauter, briller, pousser and tirer. They also explore useful descriptive language including grand, petit and étrange.

The accompanying song, J'y crois / I Believe, adds to the magical atmosphere of the story.  Children sing about shining stars, the night sky and dreams, giving them plenty of opportunity to hear, repeat and use familiar French vocabulary in a memorable musical context. The French and English lyrics of the song are included in the workbook.

But Little Beast is much more than a vocabulary workbook. The story encourages children to use their imagination and think about dreams, friendship and believing in possibilities. Little Beast's adventure develops into a gentle exploration of what happens when we look at the world with curiosity and imagination, making this a particularly lovely module for the darker, magical months of the year.

The workbook also introduces children to fascinating facts about stars. In the fun Little Beast's Amazing Star Facts! section, they discover how stars form, how incredibly hot they can be, how long they live and how scientists learn about stars. They also explore the enormous scale of space and discover more about our own Sun and the stars we can see from Earth.

The Dive Deeper section takes the learning further with opportunities to think about belief, dreams, friendship and the importance of helping others. Children are encouraged to reflect on their own experiences, consider what they believe in and explore the idea that sometimes things do not happen immediately — but that doesn't necessarily mean we should stop believing or trying.
