Join Little Beast on an exciting underwater adventure as he plunges into the depths of the ocean in search of his best friend, the star. From the night sky above the sea to the deepest part of the ocean, Little Beast encounters fascinating sea creatures, mysterious shipwrecks and unexpected adventures along the way.
Little Beast is playing a balancing game with his friend the star when he suddenly slips and falls. Down and down he goes, through the night sky and into the sea, eventually reaching the bottom of the ocean. As he continues his journey, he meets a seahorse, ghostly fish, a starfish, an octopus, an angler fish, a turtle and a whale before finally finding his friend. With the help of his new friends, Little Beast makes his way back towards the surface and eventually returns to the beach with a very special treasure.
The story provides a rich context for developing French vocabulary and phrases around the sea, sea creatures, movement, friendship, night-time and the natural world. Children hear and practise language such as tomber, plonger, nager, glisser, chercher, l'océan, la tortue marine, la baleine, la pieuvre, l'hippocampe, l'étoile de mer, les algues and l'épave de navire.
The accompanying song gives children plenty of opportunities to hear, repeat and sing familiar French vocabulary. The song follows Little Beast as he falls through the dark night, dives deep into the sea and encounters the different creatures beneath the water. Children hear and repeat the names of the whale, seahorse, angler fish, octopus and starfish, as well as the key action words tomber and plonger. The lyrics for the French and English versions of the song are included in the workbook.
But Little Beast Under the Sea is much more than a vocabulary workbook. Little Beast's adventure provides opportunities to explore friendship, helping others and looking after our oceans. After Little Beast finds himself deep beneath the sea, it is the help of the creatures he meets that eventually gets him safely back to the surface. The Dive Deeper section takes the theme of friendship further, encouraging children to think about what makes a good friend, what qualities they value in others and how friendships grow.
The workbook also encourages children to discover more about the amazing world beneath the waves. In Petit Monstre's Tips for Saving the Ocean, children learn practical ways they can help protect the marine environment, including reducing single-use plastic, choosing sustainably sourced fish and seafood, avoiding rubbish on beaches and taking part in clean-ups. They also discover some remarkable facts about the ocean, including its enormous size, the amount of wildlife it contains and how little of it humans have actually explored.
