Join Adèle and her friends as they explore the wonderful world of family. From parents, brothers and sisters to grandparents, cousins, aunts and uncles, the children discover that every family is different — and that every family is special.

The story begins at school, where the children are learning about family trees. Adèle introduces her own family and talks about her brother Martin, her sisters Lola and Sofia, her parents and her grandparents. As the story continues, the children introduce other members of their families, including twins, cousins, aunts, uncles and great-grandparents. They discover that some families are large and some are small, some have family members who live in different countries and some families have changed over the generations.

The story provides a rich context for developing French vocabulary and phrases around family and relationships. Children hear and practise language such as la famille, la mère, le père, le frère, la sœur, la grand-mère, le grand-père, la tante, l'oncle, le cousin, la cousine, les jumeaux, les jumelles, l'arrière-grand-mère and l'arrière-grand-père. They also begin to use French possessives including mon, ma and mes when talking about members of their family.

The accompanying song gives children plenty of opportunities to hear, repeat and sing familiar French vocabulary. The song Nous sommes une famille introduces family members through a simple, repetitive structure, helping children practise words such as maman, papa, mon frère and mon père. The lyrics for the French and English versions of the song are included in the workbook.

But My Family is much more than a vocabulary workbook. The story provides opportunities to explore the many different ways families can look and live. Children discover that families can be large or small, can include several generations and can have members who live in different places. They learn that families may speak different languages and have different traditions, while still sharing many things in common.

The workbook also encourages children to discover how family life has changed over time. In The Family 100 Years Ago, children travel back in time to explore what family life in England was like around 100 years ago. They discover how children lived, learned and spent their free time, looking at subjects including school, food, travel and entertainment, and comparing life in the past with life today.

In Dive Deeper, children are encouraged to think about families in greater depth. They explore what makes a family, why families are important, how families can be different and what children can learn from older generations. They also think about the different languages spoken by families around the world and the importance of sharing family stories and traditions from one generation to the next.
