Join the two children and Leo the puppy for a perfect summer’s day filled with sunshine, picnics, the beach and, of course, ice cream! Summer – L’Été turns a familiar family day out into a fun bilingual learning adventure.

The story begins on a sunny summer morning. After getting dressed and preparing a delicious picnic, the children have an important decision to make — should they eat in the forest, park or at the beach? The beach wins! With Leo the puppy by their side, they spend the day flying a kite, playing with buckets and spades and splashing in the sea. But when lunchtime arrives, their picnic has mysteriously disappeared. The culprit? A very greedy Leo! Luckily, the day ends happily with a visit from the ice-cream van.

The story provides a fun context for developing French vocabulary around summer, the seaside, nature and everyday places. Children explore three vocabulary themes throughout the workbook: At the Seaside, Nature and Into Town.

They learn words such as le seau (bucket), la pelle (spade), le sable (sand), le château de sable (sandcastle), le coquillage(seashell), la mer (sea), l’étoile de mer (starfish), le crabe (crab) and le poisson (fish), before moving on to nature words including l’arbre (tree), la fleur (flower), le chemin (path), l’herbe (grass) and la feuille (leaf). The town vocabulary introduces useful everyday words including l’épicerie (grocery shop), le café, le magasin (shop), la boulangerie (bakery), le pain (bread) and la boîte aux lettres (post box).

The bilingual Summer Song / La chanson de l’été reinforces the theme through music and repetition, with children singing about hot summer weather, going to the sea, having a picnic, swimming and eating ice cream.

But Summer – L’Été is much more than a vocabulary workbook. It encourages children to get outside, explore their local area and make the most of summer through activities including geocaching, town trails, cycling and outdoor adventures.
