Join Pierre and his little bird friend as they explore the colourful world around them. From the blue sky and green grass to the yellow sun, red tree, grey rock and pink ball, this simple bilingual story introduces children to colours and the natural world in French and English.

As Pierre explores, he meets his bird friend and discovers the animals living in the woods. The journey continues past the river and towards the sea before day turns into night. The moon and stars appear in the dark sky, and animals and people around the world look up at the very same night sky. The story finishes with a simple message of wonder and discovery — our world is amazing.

The story provides a natural context for developing French vocabulary around colours, nature, position and the world around us. Children learn colours including bleu (blue), vert (green), jaune (yellow), rouge (red), gris (grey), marron(brown) and rose (pink), alongside familiar nouns such as le ciel (sky), le soleil (sun), l’arbre (tree), l’oiseau (bird), l’herbe (grass), le rocher (rock) and le ballon (ball).

A second vocabulary section expands the story with words including la mer (sea), le bois (wood), la rivière (river), le garçon (boy), l’ami (friend), la nuit (night), le monde (world), la lune (moon) and l’étoile (star), as well as positional language such as above/over and behind.

The bilingual What Colour Is the Sky? song reinforces the key vocabulary through music and repetition. Children sing about the colours of the sky, grass, sun and other parts of Pierre’s world before repeating the idea that we all share and love our world.

But What Colour Is the Sky? is much more than a colours workbook. The story encourages children to notice connections between people, animals and the natural world, from the creatures living in the woods to people across the world looking at the same moon and stars.
