FLEA BITES: Family holidays in France

Family Holidays in France

Here at Les Puces, the French language school for children in the south east of England, we really encourage parents to take their children on holiday to France, as it’s a great way to reinforce the French language and practice it whilst, of course, sampling French living.

France is the world’s top tourist destination and regularly attracts over 80 million tourists per annum, according to sources including *France Diplomatie and the **United Nations World Tourism Organization,

Spoilt For Choice

France is a super holiday destination not only because you are spoilt for choice with the wide diversity of activities, entertainment, cultural sights, beaches and attractions, but because it is also relatively close and easy to travel to.

You can just pop over for a short break of 2 – 4 days or spend a couple of weeks immersing yourselves in the French culture. Simply take the ferry or travel through the tunnel with your own vehicle or fly to one of the many French airports and hire a car when you get there. In no time at all, you will be starting your days with mouth-watering croissants, indulging in gateaux and crêpes whilst sipping excellent Chablis (for the adults of course!)

Cities, Beaches and Outdoor Adventures

You can choose a city break, which will include an abundance of museums, historical attractions, diversified dining and parks; a countryside retreat where you can enjoy the scenery and enjoy camping, cycling or horse riding; or take a beach holiday with oodles of outdoor fun and family activities.

Here we take a look at 4 of the different types of holiday on offer:

  • Camping

  • Farm Stays

  • Gites

  • Holiday Parks

Camping is extremely popular with French families and it’s not just tented campsites. There are self-catering mobile homes, wooden chalets or tents. It’s a wonderful way for your children to interact with French children who will play together totally oblivious to the language barrier.

You could try camping in Brittany in northern France with its wide beautiful beaches and quaint historical villages or the Pyrenees in southern France, where you can experience mountain biking and white water rafting.

Farm Stays

These are known as “Fermes Auberges” and there’s lots of family friendly fun to be had where the children can get involved with farm activities and discover the sights and sounds of the countryside learning new skills and activities. Children can often join in with daily farm tasks such as collecting eggs and feeding the animals whilst enjoying homegrown vegetables and other produce at meal times.

Gites are self-catering cottages or villas, which are available for rent. Quite often the holiday home is connected to a main house. You could be enjoying a Gites holiday in Normandy, Provence or Poitou-Charentes.

Holiday Parks

These can be static mobile homes, tents, chalets or apartments. They will provide lots of interaction for your children with other children so that they can make friends, participate in the entertainment programme, sports tournaments and enjoy all the facilities. Many are situated amidst breathtaking scenery or close to fabulous beaches with loads of space.

Talking of space, did you know that France has a similar population to the UK but is twice the size?

France really is a paradise for relaxing and getting away from it all and there are an abundance of child-friendly holidays to take. You really are spoilt for choice!
